Five days pass and the comlink remains silent. Raine spends every night with the comlink next to her, hoping that Jenos would contact her. On several occasions she almost tried to contact him herself, but controlled her impulse. The nights seemed to drag on forever to her, since she did nothing but lie on the bed.
Finally, the comlink crackles lightly before a voice whispers out. “Raine?” Raine jumps lightly at the voice. She grabs the comlink and brings it to her. “Jen?” She hears a light sigh and then a chuckle. “Yeah, sorry I couldn’t talk to you before.” Raine shakes her head. “It’s okay… what is it?” After a slight hesitation she hears him. “Huh?”
Raine gets off the bed and walks to the window, looking out at the dark night sky. “Why did you wait this long to call back?” A few seconds pass before he speaks again. “I’m sorry. Things just haven’t been going as I wanted.” Raine lowers her voice. “Just what is going on?” She hears him sigh. “I told you I’ll tell you later, just, now’s not that time.” “When will it be then?”
She waits for him to answer, hearing his breathing but no words. “Jen?” A few more breaths are heard then he speaks. “I don’t know when.” “Jenos…” “Yeah?” Raine bites her lower lip in concern. “I’m worried about you. It feels like you’re pushing me away…” He sighs again. “I’m really sorry Raine. I promise to you I’ll tell you everything later on. Please, just trust me on this.”
“Can… can’t I see you at least? To feel you and know you’re fine?” He lets out a long sigh. “Okay. I’ll drop by your house some time this week. It’s going to interfere a bit with what I have going on, but if it’ll make you feel better, okay.” Raine smiles lightly as she looks out at the muted lights coming out of the other houses around her. “Thank you Jen. I’m looking forward to it.” “Good night Raine. Sleep well.” She steps away from the window and sits down on the bed. “Good night Jen.” She hears a click as he closes the line.
She sets the comlink down next to her and goes to turn off the lights. She lies down onto her bed and nestles into her pillow. “Later on. He’ll see me later on this week…” She closes her eyes and soon falls asleep.
A few hours after she falls asleep, the comlink blinks a muted red light. The frequency adjusts itself to the one Roger used and sends a quick electronic message before turning back to the frequency that contacted Jenos and turning itself off. In a small, dimly lighted room, Roger reads the message displayed on the monitor in front of him and nods his head. He stands up and leaves the room to the one next to it. The three people in it look at him. Roger smiles at them. “We got him.”
